Land disposession and trauma

A family evicted from their home outside Krugersdorp accuses the courts of using the wrong piece of legislation to sanction their eviction. Prestige Park management using the PIE Act recently evicted the Molefe family, which has stayed on a plot of land since 1955. That act classified them as illegal occupiers. However, the family insists that their rights to that land are protected under the ESTA Act. The family also accuses officials at Mogale City Local Municipality of bending the rules to enable the process of their eviction by the developers.

Sinking Villiage: Climate Change

Tlokweng village in the North West province is currently suffering severe heat, frequent rains, and soil erosion, which is causing cracks in their buildings.

Coal lung disease

Former coal miners in South Africa have launched several class-action lawsuits against different coal mining companies for contracting coal lung disease. The workers say they are ill with various health conditions, which they contracted while in the employ of those companies due to inadequate protective equipment, and without any compensation from the mines.

Two-Pot System

Retirement fund members must not use their retirement funds recklessly when the proposed two-pot system comes into effect next year. Economist Simon Mohapi says fund members must be financially disciplined and only access their retirement funds for emergencies. The proposed two-pot system, which will apply to the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and other defined benefit funds, seeks to divide contributions into two separate pots: a savings pot and a retirement pot.
