INTRO: Until the SACP and ANC have reached an agreement on the communist party's decision to contest the 2026 local government elections alone - its members must recuse themselves from ANC elections structures. This was just one of the resolutions of the ANC's 5th National General Council that concluded yesterday on Thursday (11/12/2025). The SACP's decision is a concern for the ANC as many of its members have dual membership of both parties with implications on which party to vote and campaign for. The SACP has noted the decision and has however said that the two parties need to iron out the modalities of its conference resolution. The party further adds that its members who hold dual membership will not be forced to choose between the two. Meanwhile, Ramaphosa sent a strong reprimand to delegates regarding the party's lack of implementation of policies. As part of the party's renewal process -Ramaphosa highlighted that more members are acceding to the step side resolution which requires members who are charged with corruption or other serious crimes to voluntarily step-aside from party responsibilities. He added that if the party wants to win the 2026 Local government elections, the ANC must field its most dedicated, honest and competent candidates. The NGC has charged the ANC NEC with drafting the resolutions reached at this four day meeting into an action plan - complete with tangible programs and timeframes. The leadership of the ANC in Kwazulu-Natal is on its way out. Speaking to journalists on the third day of the party's National General Council in Boksburg, party Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, says that the Provincial Task Team set up in February this year has proved to be a disappointment due to its preoccupation with positions rather than rebuilding the organisation. Mbalula levelled the same criticism at speculation on the replacement of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero by newly-elected Jo'burg Regional Secretary, Loyiso Masuku. The Secretary General also tackled the thorny issue of the dual membership of ANC and SACP members and the party's perennial financial woes. Meanwhile the financial sustainablity of the ANC will be a major issue the party will tackle after the national general council - with Mbalula conceding that the stability of the party's purse continues to be a big challenge that needs to be overcome if it is to successfully renew itself.
