Initiation is a time honoured African custom where a boy enters initiation school to be taught endurance and the basic societal roles a man is to play, however, it is also a time of worry for many because of the health risks involved with this rite of passage to manhood. Already the death toll for the current initiation season stands at 41 according to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). Why is it, that virtually every year teenage boys die or are mutilated during the initiation. Melusi Xulu: NPA challenges are healthy for transparency and accountability.
Another legal hurdle has emerged in the process to appoint South Africa's next National Director of Public Prosecutions. An advisory panel and President Cyril Ramaphosa have until today to file court papers opposing an urgent High Court application seeking to halt the appointment. Law firm B Xulu and Partners Incorporated firm argues the selection process was unlawful, biased and lacked transparency, particularly in its handling of objections against candidate Advocate Hermione Cronje. Government has since confirmed it will oppose the application. adding that it does not meet the requirements for urgency and is premature, as President Ramaphosa is still considering the report submitted by the panel. Search continues for missing SANDF member swept away by floods on Nkomazi River
The search operation of the missing member of SANDF in the Nkomazi River in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, yielded no results following the retrieval of an SANDF vehicle with a crane. Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a gang of suspects who bombed and robbed a cash-in-transit van along Khumalo Street in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni on Saturday. The department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has managed to reduce the number of dysfunctional municipalities from 66 in 2023 to 38 in 2025. The Department of Transport says its festive season preliminary road safety report shows a decline in fatalities compared to the same period last year. According to the report, there's been a 20-point-nine-percent reduction in fatal crashes and a 20-point-eight-percent reduction in fatalities from the 1st of December till the 16th of December. The department has also revealed that the average number of road fatalities per day stands at 32, which is the lowest in five years. Parliament Orders Probe into Cape Town's Violent Crime Crisis
Parliament has unanimously adopted a motion to establish a comprehensive inquiry into the violent crime crisis in Cape Town. The Economic Freedom Fighters, EFF party initiated the motion, citing evidence of rampant gang violence, mass shootings and policing failures in the region. The inquiry will be led by the Portfolio Committee on Police, in collaboration with other security cluster committees. The Activists and Citizens Forum has described alleged criminal cartel kingpin, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala's appearance before Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee, as a waste of time and tax payer money. This comes after Matlala concluded his 2 days of testimony before the committee as members of Parliament investigate allegations of corruption and political interference in the country's justice system. The Forum has also accused Matlala of misdirecting the interaction with Parliamentarians with the aim to protect people who are behind his lavish lifestyle. While Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso appears happy with the result, this is not what Rulani Mokwena was looking for as Alger are struggling with one point from two matches.
