Lily Mine families still seeking closure 10 years after tragic incident
Thursday marked exactly ten years since the tragic incident where three Lily Gold Mine workers were swallowed alive during a mine collapse back in 2016. The bodies of Pretty Nkabule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyirenda have never been retrieved since after a container they were working on fell into a sinkhole. NPA to appoint permanent prosecutors to task team probing police misconduct
The newly-appointed National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Lekgoa Mothibi has committed to allocating state prosecutors to the police task team that has been established by National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola in order to fast track investigations and prosecutions emanating from proceedings of the Madlanga Commission. This follows a directive by President Cyril Ramaphosa to the police top brass to constitute a special investigations task team to investigate prima facie evidence of wrongdoing by people identified in the Madlanga Commission's interim report. KwaZulu-Natal police say Hawks Head Major-General Lesetja Senona breached security protocols by entering the police headquarters on a weekend and failing to sign the register. Elephants escaping the Songimvelo Nature Reserve in Mooiplaas near Elukwatini, Mpumalanga are tormenting communities neighbouring the reserve. One of the 14 learners who died in a scholar transport-truck crash in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, has been laid to rest in Limpopo. SADC scrambles to assist victims in flood ravaged Mozambique
Aid workers are scrambling to access flood ravaged areas of Mozambique to provide much-needed support, but are facing a mammoth task. At least 600,000 people have been affected in Gaza province alone, where over 10,000 square kilometres is covered by floodwater. In response to the floods, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has dispatched its Emergency Response Team to assist in mop up operations in that country. The regional body says the team will work on the ground to assess humanitarian needs, evaluate the scale of the impact and support national response efforts as affected communities grapple with the aftermath of heavy rains, infrastructure damage and displacement. A former high school principal from Cape Town will challenge the Western Cape Department of Education in the Labour Court. Kotze: Postponement confuses the Madlanga Commission's process.
Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has just ruled that the witness, who was meant to take the stand today will now appear before the commission on Tuesday. The witness' legal counsel Hartley Ngoato brought an application to the Madlanga Commission to postpone todays proceedings citing that they have not been given sufficient time to prepare. He also cited his unavailability to work this weekend due to medical reasons. Madlanga says it is only fair to grant the postponement to ensure that sufficient time is given to the witness to peruse the documents in preparation for their testimony. Interceptions of people trying to enter SA illegally halved: 58,000 to 26,000.
The Border Management Authority, jointly with the Department of Home Affairs, have raised concerns about a sharp rise in unaccompanied minors intercepted at ports of entry during the 2025/2026 festive season. BMA reveals that at Beitbridge, 53 undocumented minors were discovered, with some as young as three, showing a major increase. While at Lebombo, 15 minors were stopped in the mountains trying to exit illegally. The authority says the most alarming was a Mozambican national who was caught smuggling a missing Johannesburg child to Mozambique; the suspect has since been detained. The Border Management Authority, jointly with Home Affairs, were earlier addressing the media on the 2025/2026 festive season operations.
