The Gauteng Department of Health concerned by the sharp rise in malaria cases

The Gauteng Department of Health has raised concern over a sharp rise in malaria cases and related deaths across the province. While malaria is both preventable and treatable, delayed diagnosis can be fatal. Health officials say the increase is partly linked to travel to high-risk regions such as Limpopo and Mpumalanga, as well as neighbouring countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. As the world marks World Malaria Day on the 25th of April, the department is urging residents to remain vigilant, seek early treatment and take preventative measures to curb the spread of the disease. Police have condemned the alleged gang-related murder of four males in Voorbrug, Delft, on the Cape Flats. Suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has come under intense questioning at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry over his decision to respond to a 2am call linked to an alleged police success. Commissioners pressed Mkhwanazi on why he rushed to the scene without confirming who was running the operation or whether it was officially sanctioned. Mkhwanazi admitted he acted on information from an informant, saying it was common practice to respond at any hour even without full details. However, he conceded that in this case, that never happened, and the operation was not recorded through official police channels.

KwaZulu-Natal religious group attracts 100 committed followers.

More than 50 people have left their spouses, children, jobs and even stopped taking chronic medication to become part of Ekhaya Labafundi bakaJehova - a congregation at KwaMaphumulo north of Durban - to dedicate their lives entirely to serving Christ. Congregants came from across the country, to live full-time on the property. They do not leave the church to socialise in the outside world, as they call it. SA loses R16.5bn to illicit alcohol as industry urges crackdown

The Drinks Federation of South Africa says illicit alcohol costs the country billions, with an estimated R25 billion annual market value. Illicit trade accounts for 18% of the market, resulting in R16.5 billion in fiscal losses. DF-SA is calling for coordinated action to combat the issue. The federation will participate in the EMEA Security Conference in Cape Town. A Responsible Trade Task Force has been established to tackle the problem. MK Party seeks urgent court bid to block Batohi-linked public fund payout

The uMkhonto weSizwe, MK Party has approached the High Court in Pretoria on an urgent basis to block what it calls the unlawful release of public funds tied to National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamila Batohi. The party claims serious doubts over Batohi's fitness to remain in office and fears she could still pocket a large gratuity payment despite those concerns.
