Throughout history, most cultures have found one way or another to practice some form of physical restraint for sexual purposes. With options like leather and chains available to some, the Japanese, being a sea-faring nation, had rope; and lots of it. The art of Shibari has origins in martial arts and restraining captives, and morphed into the erotic bondage Kinbaku (Kinbaku-bi literally translates as “the beauty of tight binding”) between the 19th and 20th centuries. This tradition has been performed live, photographed, and practiced in private and public spaces for hundreds of years, and now, for the first time on South African radio, happened live on air in the 5FM studios. Astrid, who practises and teaches from Embodiment CT, has spent years studying with practitioners and educators around the world learning tension, knots and ties. She steps into the 5FM studio with a new subject of human macrame: 5FM presenter Leah Jazz. Jazz has curated her late-night show, 5 After Hours, into a safe and informed space to discuss sex education and covers topics ranging from virginity to vibrators, and now, will be the first South African radio presenter to have been tied up in rope bondage while in the middle of a live broadcast.
